How To Use Your Windows Media Player To Get Free Music Downloads

By Tony Miller

In today’s article I’m going to show you an easy way to use your Windows Media Player to get unlimited free music downloads.

The first thing your going to do is open your Windows Media Player and click on the tab that says Guide.

After windowsmedia.com has finished loading you will see a screen similar to the one shown below.

Using the search feature, find a song that you want to listen to and keep. While the song is playing windows is actually downloading the song to a temporary file on your hard drive.

wmp guide.jpg

After the song has completely finished playing , open either My Computer or My Documents, then type in at the top:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Replace “Your User Name” with the user name you use to logon to your computer.

After you have found the song all you have to do is right click and click copy. Now go to a folder where you want to keep your music files and click paste.

You now have the option of playing the song, transferring it to an Mp3 player or whatever else you choose.

How To Increase Your Broadband Speed In 3 Minutes

Here’s a simple 3 minute tweak ( XP Pro only ) that will increase your broadband speed.

By default ( even with QoS disabled ) Windows XP reserves up to 20 percent of your connections bandwidth.

To override this reserve take the following steps.

Make sure you Log on as Administrator, not as a user with Administrator privileges.

* Start-> Run-> type gpedit.msc
* You will see [Local Computer Policy]
* Expand the [Administrative Templates] branch
* Expand the [Network] branch
* Highlight [QoS Packet Scheduler]
* Double-click [Limit Reservable Bandwidth]
* Check [Enabled]
* Change [Bandwidth limit %] to 0 %
* Click [Apply] [OK]

* Restart

Effect is immediate.

How to Speed up a Windows XP Computer

If not properly maintained, the performance of all Windows XP systems will eventually degrade. To counteract this slow-down, scheduling a computer shop visit isn't your only option; you can correct performance issues yourself. Save money and squeeze more speed out of Windows XP!

Steps

  1. Remove Spyware and Viruses
    • Spyware and viruses are a leading cause of computer slowing. See this article to learn how to remove them.
    • Update and run your spyware and virus software weekly.
    • If you do not have tools installed to protect against malware, spyware, and viruses, download a free copy of AVG's Anti-Virus and/or Anti-Spyware software (free for personal use). Also, Microsoft's Windows Defender is a widely-used anti-spyware tool that is currently distributed freely as a Beta version.

  2. Defragment Your Computer - This will place similar files physically closer on the hard disk to improve load speeds.
    • Click start, again, then click run.
    • Type, "dfrg.msc" in the text field.
    • Click Defrag to start it.

  3. Perform a disk clean up.
    • Click start in the bottom left corner, then click run.
    • Type, "cleanmgr.exe" in the text field.
    • Press "okay". This can take a while if you have never done it before.

  4. Remove unwanted software.

    • Click start, then click control panel.
    • Click add/remove programs.
    • Highlight any old software you do not use and then click "remove".

  5. Stop unwanted Start-Up programs.
    • Click here and download StartUpCPL.
    • Install the software you have just downloaded.
    • Open control panel, select Start up.
    • Disable any programs you do not want load automatically.

    • Disable Services you do not use or need. Open control panel, open Administrative Tools, and select Services. Disabling the wrong Services may lead to serious problems that you may not notice right away. Please consult a reference such as overclockersclub.comfor information on specific Windows XP Services.

  6. Make Windows load faster
    • Click Start, then Run.
    • Type in 'msconfig' and press enter.
    • Click on the BOOT.INI tab at the top.
    • Over to the right there will be a box labeled Timeout with 30 in it. Change the 30 to a 3.

  7. Speed Up Processing Time
    • Turning off the fancy Windows XP graphics will noticeably increase the speed of your computer.
    • Go to Start, (Settings), Control Panel, System. NOTE: You may need to 'Switch to Classic Mode' to see the System applet.
    • Go to the Advanced tab. Click the Settings button under Performance.
    • Select the 'Adjust for best performance' radio button, then Apply, and OK.
    • The graphics aren't as flashy, but your computer will run a lot faster.

Tips

  • If this is your first defrag, do it after the disk clean up twice, then a disk defrag, and then another disk clean up.
  • For best results run defragmenter last after performing all other steps.
  • Do all the above steps quite often to keep the speed of your PC going.
  • Also, if you are willing to, there are some shells that you can use to replace explorer to free up more RAM. Installing more RAM is better but it costs more. If you can, buy your RAM on EBay or another online auction site, because the retailers like Circuit City and Office Depot have RAM marked up over 200 percent.

Warnings

  • Always create a restore point before uninstalling software, even better before you start any step.

Windows Vista Will Kill Microsoft ?

I’m going to break from tradition and blog a bit about Vista’s flaws today. So if that doesn’t interest you, feel free not to read this.

Vista would kill Microsoft, here’s reason why: Apple has fans. Microsoft has reluctant users.

I recently read an article on why Windows is so slow, and how Vista looks to be even slower. The big thing is backwards compatability. Microsoft insists on maintaining 90%+ backwards compatability. When you maintain that and add new features as well, it just has to slow things down.

Apple, on the other hand, broke from all that back in 2001 with OS X. If you were running OS X, guess what? You couldn’t run OX 9 applications. The change was somewhat painful, but it resulted in a much better, faster OS with a cleaner architecture.

Microsoft’s bloated Windows OS may be what kills the company. It keeps bundling its software resources which makes newer version of Windows to add more compatibility and at the same time include new features but at the cost of sacrificing its speed.

If Microsoft keeps maintaining its backwards compatability, it will die because it will slow to a crawl. If they ditch their backwards compatability, it will be so painful that many will shun Windows for Mac or (heaven forbid) Linux. May be then LucIfiar would be making us a Linux to Mac OS X Transformation Pack!

The truth is that Windows has never came up with anything significant after XP. They own their failure to unsuccessful Media Center PCs and even more miserable Tablet Lap Tops. Windows group was so much engaged in developing updates for ‘Service Packs’ that it continued to lag behind the very high standards being set by Apple’s Mac OS X. In mean time there were 5 versions of OS X launched, each with newer user friendly features such as Dashboards or Widgets, Desktop Search, Sleek UI and list goes on and on.

Vista is thought to be 40% more complex than XP. There are still rumours that Microsoft has lost the track of such complex code in Vista, and that it decided to launch the OS rather ‘incomplete’.

P S: I don’t plan to buy Windows Vista. Do you?

50 Things That Only Ever Happen in the Movies

Like most people, I love movies. But let’s face it, most films exist in a crazy and bizarre alternative reality created by Hollywood. Here are my 50 things that regularly happen in the movie world, but hardly ever happen in the world you and I live in.

1. You’re very likely to survive any battle in any war, unless you show someone a picture of your sweetheart back home. Then you’re in trouble

2. The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any window of any building in Paris

3. Computer passwords are easy to crack - they are always the third thing you think of

4. When the hero and baddie finally meet, both guns are immediately lost and they’ll take it in turns to punch each other

5. All beds have special L-shaped sheets which reach to armpit level on women but only up to the waist of the man lying beside her

6. When listening back to answer phone messages, people will casually wander into the kitchen for the first two short messages, but run to the answer phone for the third call (mother/killer/dead friend etc)

7. When you turn out the light to go to bed, everything in you room will still be visible, just slightly bluish

8. People deal with stressful, life threatening situations by making quick witted quips

9. No-one, but no-one uses Microsoft Windows – everyone uses unique operating systems. All of these computer systems, however mundane, are full of animated graphics and enormous download bars in the middle of the screen

10. When paying for a taxi, you don’t need to look at your wallet as you take out a note. Just grab one out at random and hand it over. It will always be the exact fare

11. The ventilation system of any building is the perfect hiding place. Nobody will ever think of looking for you in there and you can travel to any other part of the building undetected

12. It is not necessary to say “Hello” or “Goodbye” in telephone conversations. Also, if you’ve been disconnected it’s always worth frantically beating the cradle and saying “Hello? Hello?” repeatedly
13. If our hero gets into a fight, he will invariable end up with a small cut in the right corner of his mouth. He’ll make sure he wipes the blood on the back of his hand, and give it a disapproving look

14. Anyone can land a plane perfectly as long as there is someone in the control tower to talk you down

15. Sex is always begun in the missionary position and finished with the woman on top

16. Shots fired at people hiding around corners always strike the edge of the building exploding some brickwork near the character’s face

17. On a police stake-out, the action will only ever take place when food is being consumed and scalding hot coffees have been perched precariously on the dashboard

18. Being an aging detective and drinking whiskey alone in a bar makes you irresistible to women

19. If a good person dies with their eyes open, a friend will tenderly close them. If a villain dies with his eyes open the camera will linger on his face until just before the actor has to blink

20. Every single sporting event is won by the underdogs with a last second winner

21. All phone numbers, regardless of where they are, have the area code 555

22. When a plane is low on fuel, it helps to tap the fuel gauge – this even works on multi-million pound jet planes

23. Only men are alcoholics. But luckily, any alcoholic can quit drinking instantly when faced with an important challenge. Not only that, the instant he stops drinking, all his faculties return and he won’t suffer any withdrawal

24. Dogs always know who’s bad, and bark at them

25. All bombs have different coloured wires, so the hero can easily differentiate which one he needs to cut

26. If someone has “fixed” the foot-brakes in a car, the driver won’t use the hand-brake and gears to slow down – but proceeds to drive at high speed through a busy city

27. Anyone who sheepishly picks up a musical instrument and is humble about their ability can play like a professional

28. If you decide to start dancing in the street, everyone you bump into will be able to dance and know all the steps

29. In a spaceship battles, weapons can only be fired when you are in visual range

30. It is always possible to find a parking spot directly outside any building you’re visiting

31. All things are bullet proof – cars, tables, other bodies etc

32. All police services (particularly in New York) have an unlimited supply of police cars. They also have the unluckiest (and worst trained) drivers, resulting in head on collisions, smashing parked cars, falling into water and of course the obligatory flying-roll, causing the car to land upside down and crushing the lights (with the siren fizzling out as if it’s run out of batteries)

33. Television news bulletins usually contain a story which affects you personally at the precise moment you turn it on – after which you turn the TV off.

34. During all police investigations it is obligatory to visit a strip club at least once

35. Any lock can be picked with a credit card or paperclip in seconds. The only exception to this is if it’s the door to a burning building with a child inside, in which case you have to shoulder-barge it

36. All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large red digital displays so you know exactly when they are going to explode

37. Should you wish to pass yourself off as a German officer, you don’t need to learn to speak German. Simply speaking English with a German accent will do. Similarly, when they are alone, all German soldiers speak English to each other

38. Once applied, lipstick never rubs off. Even when scuba diving

39. Any police officer about to retire from the force will more often than not die on their last day (especially if their family have planned a party)

40. When staying in a haunted house, women should investigate any strange noises whilst wearing their most revealing underwear

41. All grocery shopping involves the purchase of a French loaf and fruit which is placed into two large, open brown paper bags

42. Don’t panic if you’re heavily outnumbered in a martial arts fight, your opponents will wait patiently to attack you one by one by dancing around you in a threatening manner until it’s their turn to fight

43. Whenever a microphone is turned on it will immediately feedback

44. Guns are like disposable razors. If you run out of bullets, just throw the gun away. You will always find another one

45. All single women have a cat

46. Cars will explode instantly when struck by a single bullet

47. No matter how savagely a spaceship is attacked, its internal gravity system is never damaged

48. If being chased through a city you can usually find cover in a passing carnival or parade

49. One man shooting at 20 men has a better chance of killing them than they have of killing him. Baddies and Henchmen have no gun training and fire in wild panic when confronted by the hero

50. All Englishmen are evil, but clever – but never actually clever enough to kill their nemesis though. Rather, they devise elaborate devices incorporating fuses, pulleys, deadly gases, lasers, man-eating sharks etc

How to install Windows XP in 5 hours or less

"

My Windows XP installation has reached its half-life. (You do know that Windows has a half-life, don’t you? Every installation of Windows naturally degrades along a logarithmic curve until it becomes annoying, then unbearable, then unusable. Each successive revision of Windows has featured a slightly longer half-life. Back in the day, Windows 95 would last me about 3 months, while my copy of Windows XP has lasted me almost 9. I’m not bitter; when you realize that you’re measuring on a logarithmic scale, a factor of 3 improvement is really quite impressive.)

Still, the fact remains that my Windows XP laptop can no longer (a) print, (b) sleep, or (c) change network settings without crashing. This is not multiple choice; it can’t do any of those things. It’s time for a clean re-install.

  1. Back up entire d: drive to iMac upstairs. rsync rocks.
  2. Find Windows XP install disc.
  3. Reboot with Windows XP install disc.
  4. Asked for product activation. Curse Microsoft.
  5. Search my house in vain for my original, 100% legitimate, retail Windows XP box.
  6. Reboot." Click here to read the remaining steps on the site.

Geek to Live: Incorporate text files onto your desktop

by Gina Trapani

You've gotten into the habit of stowing away information into text files. But how do you make sure your todo.txt doesn't languish in the dark depths of your hard drive, untouched?

If you keep your daily worklog, grocery shopping list, todo's, project ideas or even your calendar in text files, you can embed that information right onto your Windows desktop automatically with free Windows system monitoring software, Samurize.

Among other things, Samurize displays a constantly-updated text file right on your computer desktop, no text editor or command shell required, for quick and easy visual reference.

Note: Back in the dog days of July, we dashed off a post on Samurize, but to the newbie, it's not the most intuitive piece of software. This article serves as a detailed tutorial on getting started with Samurize.

Check out a Windows desktop with Samurize configured to display several .txt files on it, as well as a short process list:

It's called plus-addressing, and it essentially gives you an unlimited number of e-mail addresses to play with. Here's how it works: say your address is pinkyrocks@gmail.com, and you want to automatically label all work e-mails. Add a plus sign and a phrase to make it pinkyrocks+work@gmail.com and set up a filter to label it work (to access your filters go to Settings->Filters and create a filter for messages addressed to pinkyrocks+work@gmail.com. Then add the label work). Click here to read more on this cool forum.
